A Chiropractor or Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) is a primary healthcare physician who specializes in conditions of the Neuromusculoskeletal system.  In similar terms, a Chiropractor examines the relationship between the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves), spine (the conduit through which the spinal cord and nerves pass), and the organs that receive and send information to and from the brain.  Much like telephone lines, the nervous system is the information superhighway that connects the brain to the rest of the body and the body to the brain.  Every function from movement to breathing and digestion is linked through the nerves to the brain and body.  These nerves pass through the spinal column and project out through each segment to transmit information throughout your body.

Think about a down branch on a telephone line, depending on the amount of pressure or “impedance” on the line, the signal begins to be disrupted and your call might get fuzzy or in some cases do not connect at all.  This dysfunction is similar to what happens in your body.  Think of the vertebra, or bones of the spine, as the branch and the nerves as the telephone lines.  When the vertebrae lose their appropriate position, a cascade of biomechanical and chemical irritants cause impedance on the nerves resulting in dysfunction of the signals back and forth. In the world of Chiropractic, we call this cascade of events the Subluxation Complex.  Symptoms begin to present themselves depending on the level of malposition, time left untreated, and mechanism of injury.  These symptoms most commonly present as pain, tingling, numbness, swelling, and other forms of dysfunction. In some cases, headaches, migraines, and organ dysfunction (called autonomic dysfunction) may ensue. In extreme cases severe weakness and loss of function, loss of bowel and bladder control, and even loss of sensation may occur.  As Chiropractors, we are trained to diagnose and treat certain conditions by delivering a specific high speed/low force thrust to the involved segment or segments to reduce and correct the interference on the nerves.

As Primary Healthcare Physicians we manage more than just pain and Neuromusculoskeletal conditions. We are licensed to order blood tests, urinalysis, advanced imaging, and much more to root out the cause of your condition. As Chiropractors we are trained to assess and diagnose an extensive list of medical conditions, this is why it is so important to report any surgeries, medical conditions, medications, and recent medical appointments to your Doctor.  By recognizing these conditions, we then synthesize our plan of care and if necessary, refer you to the appropriate medical professional.

“Subluxation is the condition of a vertebrae which has lost its proper juxtaposition to the one above, the one below, or both, to an extent less than a luxation, which impinges nerves and interferes with the transmission of mental impulses.”    -B.J. Palmer the Developer of Chiropractic

“An adjustment is a specific concussion of forces delivered by a Chiropractor, at the right time, in the right place, and in the proper manner for the correction of the cause of subluxation.” -D.D. Palmer the Discoverer of Chiropractic
